Patient Thoughts About Physical Therapy

I had the misfortune of injuring my back fairly severely when I was working as a maintenance man many moons ago. I made sure that I rested my back and took the prescribed medications, but it was when I started doing physical therapy that I really started to notice a difference. I have since learned many things about physical therapy that have allowed me to maintain good back health.

One of the first things that I learned about physical therapy is that it is designed to keep you active, which is something I cannot say for the other two remedies. Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in resting when you injure yourself, and I thanked God every day for those painkillers, but somehow, I did not really feel like I was treating the problem the way it needed to be treated. Physical therapy helped me to get back on my feet, and while it did sometimes hurt more than my back would hurt after laying on the couch for a while, it was not nearly as stiff and would not get as sore after a few hours.

One of the things that I learned about physical therapy that I really like the most is the fact that it something you can do whenever you want. I made it a point to write down every exercise I was doing while I was doing it because I knew that eventually I would be discharged from physical therapy and be on my own. I wanted to make sure that I knew how to do the exercises that made my back feel so good whenever I wanted to in the future. Once I ran out of painkillers, that was it, and one cannot exactly rest whenever they want to, either.

Another thing that I like about physical therapy is that it does not cost nearly as much as the other two forms of treatment do. The painkillers that I bought were fortunately covered by my health insurance, but I still had to pay the co-pay on each one, and there were three different types of medications! With the rest, whenever I was resting I was not working, and that was costing me money as well. I have to admit, this was what bothered me the most. When I found the time, I would always try to do my physical therapy exercises to keep on top of my back problem, and it worked.

I have learned a lot about physical therapy and have come to value it greatly. I think that anyone who injures their back should give it a try and see how well it works for them. They might just be surprised!
